Pastor Blog: Get Smart

One of my favorite old TV shows was“Get Smart”.  I remember watching that show every week… it was something I looked forward to. Recently, I saw the movie and I really liked it. Now to be honest, I am not sure if I liked it because it was a good movie, or if I liked it because it brought back so many memories.

If you watched the show, then you will remember Maxwell Smart as Agent 86 and his girlfriend, Agent 99. You will remember the chief and all the cool stuff used by Smart and the other agents. (My favorite was the “phone in the shoe” gadget.) And of course who could forget the great words of wisdom uttered on the show. (Again, my favorite was when Max would exclaim, “Missed it by that much!!”) Yep, “Get Smart” was a great show.

Of course, there was quite a bit of humor that I did not understand… lots of subtle little things that went right over my head as a young kid. For example, I never understood the significance of the name of the organizations that were pitted against each other. Do you remember what they were called?? The good guys were known as CONTROL while the bad guys were known as KAOS. Isn’t that clever?? When I was a kid, I did not understand the significance of these names but now… well, I have a new understanding. KAOS represents evil and the opposite of chaos is CONTROL.

I thought about all of this a couple of weeks ago. I had reread the story of creation, and all of a sudden this idea of control and order out of chaos became very clear to me. What was formless, void, and dark becomes beautifully structured and purposeful. God speaks and creation happens. God speaks and control happens. God speaks and light and life burst into existence. God speaks and each creature and each created space has its place and purpose. God speaks and nothingness is transformed to good. God’s control and order are seen in the process as well as the final result.

You know, you and I are often faced with chaos in our lives. Often times things seem out of control. Cancer, health problems, death of a loved one, financial difficulties, relationships that fall apart… all of these things and many others, happen in our lives and we feel out of control… our lives in utter chaos. So what do we do?? Do we wait on Agents 86 and 99 to come to our rescue?? I hope not. Instead, I believe we need to reclaim the God of Genesis. We need to remember and reclaim the God of creation who brings order and control out of chaos.

We need to remember that God will do the same for our lives. God will restore order, purpose, and beauty to our lives. And, when we look with faith out on the horizon of history, we can see a day when chaos is completely destroyed and we will experience that place which God promises… a place without chaos… without pain… without tears and suffering. And what a glorious day that will be!!
